Talk about the Boston Red Sox

In debut, Billy Wagner fans side in 8th

If that’s what Billy Wagner looks like 10 months after elbow surgery, it’s no wonder the National League didn’t mind seeing him go.

Wagner made his Red Sox [team stats] debut one to remember yesterday, striking out the side in the eighth inning by mixing his trademark 95 mph fastball with a devastating slider that undoubtedly had the rest of the American League saying, “Are you serious?”

Facing the heart of the Blue Jays order, Wagner struck out Aaron Hill and Vernon Wells on nasty sliders, and blew away Lyle Overbay with a 94 mph heater. He also allowed a double to Adam Lind, though it hardly detracted from the performance.

Ellsbury steals way to club record

The record stood for more than a quarter-century, but Jacoby Ellsbury decided before the 2009 season even started that it would be left in the dust by the end of the year.

And when the Red Sox’s speedy center fielder bolted for third and slid in safely in the bottom of the first inning on Tuesday night, the mission was officially accomplished.

It was Ellsbury’s 55th stolen base of the season, surpassing Tommy Harper’s club record set in 1973.

“It was definitely nice to do it here at home in front of the crowd,” said Ellsbury. “To set a goal at the beginning of the season and to accomplish it makes it that much more enjoyable.”

Big Papi has his power stroke working

Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz started his night off Wednesday by pulling a hanging curveball from Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay deep to right field, sending it over the Rogers Centre wall for a solo shot.

It was the Red Sox slugger’s third home run in as many contests — the first coming in Texas, the second two in Toronto — marking the first time since July 6-8, 2006, Ortiz has gone deep in three straight games.

Ortiz has also homered in four of his past five games.

Ortiz got out to a slow start this season, and he didn’t homer until May 20 — also against Toronto — hitting just .219 over that span.

Youkilis shoots for Aaron Award repeat

Kevin Youkilis has a chance at a repeat. Along with teammates Jason Bay and Dustin Pedroia, the Red Sox corner infielder is among 90 Major Leaguers who have been chosen as finalists for the 2009 edition of the Hank Aaron Award, an honor Youkilis claimed last season on behalf of the American League.

The Hank Aaron Award, presented by Sharp, is awarded annually to the top overall offensive performer in each league, with three nominees per club. Created in 1999 to honor the 25th anniversary of Aaron breaking Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record, it was the first major award introduced by Major League Baseball in 30 years.

Papi to discuss positive test Saturday

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz, who promised he would elaborate more on his positive test for a performance-enhancing drug in 2003 once he gathered the facts, is now expected to address the media in a news conference before Saturday’s game at Yankee Stadium.

The Associated Press reported that Michael Weiner, who is in the process of taking over for Donald Fehr as the executive director of the union, will accompany Ortiz during the news conference.

On July 30, The New York Times, citing anonymous sources, reported that Ortiz and former Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez were both among the 104 players who tested positive during the survey testing that took place during that 2003 season.

V-Mart to get first taste of Yanks-Sox

By bolting out to an 8-0 record in head-to-head competition against the Yankees for the first time since 1912, the Red Sox hoped it would give them at least some type of edge heading down the stretch.

But as the sides get set to meet on Thursday night for the first time since June 11, the Red Sox are the ones looking up at the Bronx Bombers, who lead the American League East by 2 1/2 games.

Since head-to-head dominance has amounted to nothing for the Red Sox, maybe the presence of new impact bat Victor Martinez will be the weapon that will dent New York.

Bard untouchable for Red Sox

That word sums up Daniel Bard in a couple of different ways. For that is essentially what the Red Sox made him when teams came calling prior to the July 31 Trade Deadline. And that is pretty much what he’s been to those who have stood 60 feet, six inches away over the past month.

Here is another word that applies to Bard: Eye-popping. Again, it has multiple uses. The first would be his velocity, which can hit triple digits every so often, and frequents 98 to 99 mph. And the other area where it fits so nicely are the numbers.

The run of utter dominance for the rookie started on June 28, when Bard fired a shutout inning against the Braves. For that was the opening of an ongoing 12-outing, 13-inning span, during which Bard has allowed four hits and no walks while striking out 23.

Boston batters Birds to the tune of 23 hits

It was a Sunday slugfest at Camden Yards in which the Orioles had no answer whatsoever for the Boston bats. Right-hander Clay Buchholz didn’t have many answers either, but the overpowering offense made his shaky performance a side note in an 18-10 triumph that completed a three-game sweep of the Orioles.

Victor Martinez smashed five hits in his second game for his new team, driving in four runs in the process. Jacoby Ellsbury scored four times and had two hits. The red-hot Kevin Youkilis reached base in his first four plate appearances before having his overall streak snapped at 13. Youkilis clubbed three hits, scored twice and drove in two.
